Food Waste Magazine

FOOD WASTE - Within this project we were asked to create a varied number of magazine spreads highlighting the effects of food waste within different food categories like meat, fruit and veg, water, fish etc.
One advertising campaign that I researched was Inglorious Fruit and Veg, this inspired me to create something using fruit and veg in an ugly way as such. Their campaign is about how misshaped fruit and veg isn’t any different to ‘normal’ shaped fruit and veg, they used humour within their titles by photographing the disfigured fruit or veg and titling it, for example they photographed a misshaped carrot and titled it ‘the ugly carrot, in a soup who cares’. Their use of humour in titles really inspired me to create titles and headers that are humorous as this makes the spread appeal to much more people as the humour stands out.
This magazine spread is representing food waste of fruit and vegetables.
I have used a varied amount of materials and media within my magazine spreads to convey meaning. In this cow magazine spread I have chosen to use an image of a cow, livestock, on top of the world which is very surreal and shocking. I wanted to convey meaning because the scale of the cow compared to the world shows that it is a big problem and that cows are causing 14% of the worlds greenhouse gasses and this needs to change. The fact the image is of a real life cow makes the image much more serious as it’s a living vessel I have decided to do this as it has a much bigger impact than if the cow was a vector based image, cartoon or drawn. Also because it’s a living creature people are more inclined to empathise with the issue because it’s living like themselves.
My groovy smoothie magazine spread uses a different use of materials; these are all hand made. I made the prints for the background by cutting up different fruit and vegetables and dipping them into paint then printing them onto paper, this created a very organic and nostalgic feel to it, organic as the juices from the lemons I stamped in the image I used left a mark on the page and some of the zesty juice ate through the paint making each print different which is special and unique. The nostalgic feel comes from print making with fruit and veg, this portrays a childlike hand made feel which is friendly and inviting, this widens my target audience, making this smoothie appeal to varied viewers and people. I used two vector images within this spread, I did this to create a layer as the background on its own looked extremely flat, at first this was experimental but then I realised it made the spread look much more energising and made the image come to life rather than looking overly 2 dimensional. Also I had chosen to place the text onto a ripped piece of lined paper to make it look like an old handwritten recipe of a fridge note, either way this has portrayed both due to the hand written font, scale and layout of this specific note.
This spread below is a spread I made which shows food being celebrated. We use food to celebrate at every occasion, cake on birthdays, sweets at halloween, roast dinners at Christmas so why don't we celebrate food for itself and stop wasting it.
I have used Illustrator and Photoshop within my magazine spread making, I used the guide lines to create a template on both, I did this so that I made sure I had no text or important imagery going down the outside of the margins and gutters and also that that they weren’t on the fold line, this way everything stayed legible and organised. I have created vectors to match my statistics and facts; this is flat shapes with no pixels so they can be resized to any size without losing their quality.
In comparison a magazine spread which has more of a photography based outcome is my water one. This composition has a good depth of field which is larger at the right front and smaller towards the left back, this is helped by the angle of the camera and the way the photo is taken creating the illusion of perspective and depth. I placed folded up card under the different layers of paper to create shadow and layers, this made the images scale and shape become 3 dimensional and realistic as the viewers can associate this with real life waves and depth of the ocean, this is also helped by the colours of the paper darkening the deeper it gets. My image is quite nostalgic as paper craft and making paper boats is very childlike and playful. I have used the drop shadow in particular allot within my work to make certain objects look as if they’re not floating and this also helps them look more 3 dimensional and makes the angle of lighting look professional and planned. The burn tool was used to create the top shaddow, this allows the eyes to be drawn to the image as it’s the eyes point of focus.
Overall I think my outcome was a success as I have portrayed the important aspects of food waste by using different and interesting ways to do this in, this is important as it keeps multiple different audiences engaged and intrigued by these shocking facts. In my opinion the strongest points to my magazine was creating an engaging image to capture people’s full attention and if possible putting this with a humorous title to capture all aspects of people’s attention and engagement. This allowed me to capture peoples eyes with humour and continue this engaging energy on by following it with shocking facts and figures, this also allows people to remember facts if they’re laid out in a memorable and funny way with images and puns.
